A cult classic documentary called 'Dartmoor Entertainers', made by Westward Television in 1979, will be shown. The film centres on an evening of folk music and dance at Gidleigh Village Hall, near Chagford, and visits to the performers' home pubs and farms, mainly round that end of the moor.
The film was presented onscreen by musician and archivist Bob Cann. Performers and singers included Charlie Hill of Drewsteignton, Gordon Ching of Crockernwell, Will Hannaford of Gidleigh and Jimmy Cooper of South Zeal. Step dancing and harmonica playing by Les and Jack Rice of Chagford. Also featured, The Dartmoor Bone Rattler (David Alford), the Kelly Quarry Blasters and comedy act Ned and Martha Annaford.
Dartmoor had some big names on the folk scene in those days, as now. The younger generation of Bob Cann's Dartmoor Pixie Band will be performing some of the old routines live at the Chagford show, Mark Bazeley (melodeon) Jason Rice (piano accordion) and Rob Murch (banjo), joined by Dartmoor folksinger Bill Murray.
