Thhe Chagford Singers will honour the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two (VE Day was on 8th May 1945) with a special concert featuring Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’. This great work, performed by choir and instrumental ensemble, was the result of a commission from the Royal Armouries Museum and premiered at millennium celebrations in April 2000 The piece is compelling, colourful and exciting, while also being moving and thought-provoking. Indeed it has become one of the most well-loved choral works of the last 25 years, having been performed to great acclaim more than 3000 times world-wide!
In addition to ‘The Armed Man’, the concert will include a small selection of songs on the themes of love, peace and beauty. Howard Goodall’s gorgeous setting of ‘Love Divine’ is one of these, along with John Rutter’s ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ and Ola Gjeilo’s sublime ‘Ubi Caritas’ and ‘Northern Lights’. A short instrumental piece for two flutes, cello and piano will also complement these.
In all, the concert promises to be a highly enjoyable occasion, which should not be missed!
